UB 090/158 Edengrove is a single span underbridge on the East Coast North Line between Cupar Station and Leuchars Station. The bridge had failed it’s structural assessment governed by the capacity of the wrought iron rail bearers.
MHB Consultants were commissioned by AMCO to carry out the GRIP 4 and 5 design for the superstructure strengthening, condition led repairs, timber deck replacement and repainting.
During a disruptive possession of the line, 3 new steel UC section were installed between the existing rail bearers and a new transverse spanning hardwood deck installed. The existing cast iron parapet were removed and replaced with new steel parapets to meet working at height regulations.

As part of Network Rail’s 2017/18 programme to carry out repairs and refurbishment of existing structures, MHB Consultants were appointed as designer by Taziker Industrial to undertake the engineering design of the works on Underbridge 090/243 at Letham Mill, north of Arbroath.
The works included strengthening of the West Main Girder to carry the required RA rating by installation of a section of top flange plate, metalwork repairs, particularly to deck troughing units, to address defects identified during Condition Surveys undertaken by MHB and masonry repairs to a wingwall of the bridge, which was found to be bulging during the Condition Survey. Additionally, a new paint system was applied to the structure with warning chevrons also being applied.
The works were carried out during “Rules of the Route” possessions, with no requirement for disruptive track closures. Site works were completed by main contractor TI in April 2017, with the retaining wall anchors being installed by Albion Drilling.

During the last few months we have been working on four earthworks design schemes for QTS. This is part of the Network Rail CP5 Programme. Sites are located at Cadder West, Falkirk High, Castlecary and Forest Road in Cumbernauld. The works comprise earthworks and drainage improvements to sites which are susceptible to soil slippages during adverse weather. Solutions include soil nailing, regrading with stone fill, gabion walls and installation of earthworks drainage.
The site at Cadder West had experienced 5 slope failures over its 100m length in the last few years, and separate gabion walls had been installed at each failure site. Network Rail were concerned about the risk of further slope failures and the brief was to stabilise the whole site. Following a ground investigation and detailed design, MHB proposed new gabion walls to infill the missing sections and regrading with rockfill to the retained material behind. The works were completed on site by QTS in July 2107.
We have 3 new starts at MHB in summer 2017. Jamie Slater has joined as a Graduate Engineer, currently part time while he completes his MSc dissertation. Ross Chalmers and Callum Matthews have both completed 3 years at Strathclyde University and Glasgow Caledonian University respectively and are with us until September.
