As part of the electrification of the railway line between Manchester and Liverpool, MHB Consultants carried out the design of bases for the new mast structures being installed in the Chat Moss Area. The ground investigation found the embankment supporting the railway was supported on a timber basal layer across a peat bog. The mast bases comprised mini-piled foundations and reinforced concrete pile caps. There were a total of nine load cases across the site. The pile caps and mini piles were analysed in Strand 7 and design based on the output. The design also included the temporary works associated with the installation of the pile caps. An arrangement using trench sheeting and anchors was adopted.
