MHB were commissioned by AMCO Giffen to carry out the detailed design for a new footbridge at Arkleston Drive in Paisley.
The original 3 span footbridge over the railway comprised steel lattice girders and a reinforced concrete deck and carries pedestrians over the Glasgow Central to Stranraer railway line. The bridge was in poor condition and following an options study it was concluded that a new structure was preferable to repairing the existing bridge.
The new bridge is a 2 span bowed Warren truss structure with a main span of 37m and a smaller secondary span of 4m. The bridge will be supported on new piled foundations throughout with some of the approach substructure being retained.
The detailed design was completed late in 2018 with construction due to be carried out in early 2019. Fabrication of the structure was by Lanarkshire Welding, photo from their fabrication workshop included below.
