MHB Providing Work Experience for Students

At MHB we are always keen to do our bit to encourage the next generation of professionals into the industry . In March 2025, we were joined by Sophie McKay who spent a week in the Glasgow office finding out about the kind of work that goes on in a civil engineering consultancy.

Sophie recently completed her first year in Civil Engineering at Strathclyde University and is intending to switch to study geology at the University of Glasgow later this year. With this in mind she spent most of the week working in George Marjane’s geotechnical team.

She was involved in a number of design tasks during her short time with us. This included slope stability analysis on an unstable railway cutting in Ayrshire as well as preparing some geotechnical desk studies. This involved reviewing maps, plans, borehole logs and other historical data and compiling into reports to be used in ongoing projects.

Commenting on her week at MHB, Sophie said “ I really enjoyed working with the geotechnical team and learning more about the kind of work they do. I’m sure it will be super helpful to me in my studies going forwards”.
