Designing for Resilience. MHB Supports Award-Winning Viaduct Project

The Leven Viaduct Scour Protection Works, delivered by Story Contracting for Network Rail, was recently recognised at the ICE North West Civil Engineering Awards 2025, winning in the Small Project category.

MHB Consultants supported the project as lead designer, helping to protect a critical rail link across the Leven Estuary in Cumbria.

What Was Delivered

MHB provided:

  • Optioneering and feasibility input

  • Detailed bridge and geotechnical design

  • Site-based engineering support

We also coordinated key supply partners:

  • Kaya Consulting hydraulic modelling

  • UAV 365 aerial and ground-based surveys

Working in close partnership with Story and Network Rail, the project involved:

  • Replacing sections of the viaduct’s concrete apron

  • Repairing two damaged piers

  • Installing pre-cast concrete collars

  • Deploying bespoke pontoons to enable safe access

The Impact

The outcome:

  • Significant cost savings compared to the original design scope

  • Faster construction

  • Long-term asset protection

  • Minimal environmental disruption

Industry Recognition

The ICE judges praised the project team for early subcontractor engagement, challenging the brief, and delivering a practical solution with clear benefits.

MHB’s involvement demonstrates how strong design foundations can deliver results, not only for this project but also in other award-winning work, such as our Small Project Award at the ICE Scotland Awards 2024.
