MHB Consultants leads design for Whitley Bay Metro Station refurbishment

Nick Zissler led MHB’s design team on the multi-million-pound refurbishment of the Grade II listed canopy at Whitley Bay Metro Station. The scheme, delivered for Nexus as part of the Metro Asset Renewal Programme, has been highly commended at the CIHT North East and Cumbria Awards and shortlisted for the National Railway Heritage Awards.
MHB provided detailed structural design and temporary works support, coordinating closely with site teams to strengthen and repaint the existing steelwork, install 1,296 new glass panels, reinstate glazing above the tracks, and upgrade CCTV and public address systems. These works have improved safety and comfort for more than 1.2 million passengers each year.
Whitley Bay Metro Station is a key transport hub for North Tyneside and part of MHB’s ongoing portfolio of heritage rail projects across the UK.
Delivered for Nexus in collaboration with Kier Construction, the project reflects MHB’s capability in complex refurbishment and its commitment to preserving vital transport infrastructure.
