MHB were commissioned by AMCOGiffen to carry out the detailed design of the refurbishment works on UB 232/029 Shawmoss Road and UB 232/030 Titwood Road. Both of these bridges were part of Network Rail’s 2018/19 programme of repairs and refurbishments.

UB 232/029 Shawmoss Road is a simply supported single span half through skewed underbridge. The structure comprises of two longitudinal main girders supporting five cross girders which in turn support a series of longitudinally spanning Dorman trough decks. All girders are wrought iron riveted plate girders. The trough decks comprise early steel.

UB 232/030 Titwood Road is a simply supported single span skewed half through metallic underbridge.  The structure comprises of three longitudinal main girder supporting transverse cross girders and a longitudinal Dorman type trough deck.

For both structures the condition led metalwork and masonry repairs were to be designed to maintain the structure and be major maintenance free for at least 30 years.
